CHAPTER 11

I knocked on my bedroom door. “Sorry to intrude, but I need something from my closet.”

Ivy waved me in. “I’m watching Loki. I thought Thor was my preferred god, but now I’m having doubts.” A bowl of popcorn rested on the bed beside her and PP3 was curled up on the neighboring pillow. Traitor. I was surprised Raoul hadn’t caught the buttery scent and migrated here, too.

“They each have their charms,” I said, entering the closet and slipping my coven cloak into my tote bag.

Ivy gave me the once-over as I emerged. “It’s late. Where are you headed at this hour?”

I made sure to keep my cloak concealed in my tote bag. “Another Council of Elders meeting to discuss the snowpocalypse.” If Ivy knew there was a coven event tonight, I had no doubt she’d break her oath and attempt to follow me. The temptation would be too great for a witch who harbored a murderous grudge against the coven.

She dug a hand into the bowl. “What’s the big deal? Snow is a natural occurrence.”

“Not in Starry Hollow. You know that.”

“We had snow in my day.”

“Really?” That surprised me. I was under the impression the magical shield had been in place for centuries.

“I don’t know when they decided to alter the weather. It was after my time.” She popped a kernel into her mouth. “Could you buy a saltier brand the next time you go to the store? Much like your wardrobe, these lack flavor.”

“No problem. Would you like me to fluff your pillow before I depart, Highness?”

Ivy leaned forward to allow me access to the pillow. “That would be perfection.”

I must’ve inherited sarcasm from my mother’s side. “Oops, look at the time. I need to go.” I fled the room before she could object.

Marley met me at the front door wearing her cloak. Bonkers was perched on her shoulder.

I put a finger to my lips. “Go to bed. I already told you to sit this one out,” I whispered.

“I’m a Rose,” Marley said. “I should be there.”

“I told Ivy I was attending a Council of Elders meeting. She’ll get suspicious if she sees you’re gone, too.”

Marley chewed her lip. I could tell she was debating how hard to push. “I don’t want to stay alone with her. It’s child endangerment.”

I gave her a wry look. “That’s what you’re going with?”

Marley folded her arms. “It isn’t fair. I shouldn’t have to miss out because you accidentally brought Ivy back from the dead. If anything, you should stay here, and I should go. It’s called taking personal responsibility.”

“Believe me. I hold myself responsible, and I’m trying to fix it without getting anybody killed. In the meantime, please try to understand and do as I say.”

Marley shrugged off her cloak and flung it over her shoulder. “Fine, but you owe me.”

Relief rippled through me. “Thank you. You’re the best.”

“Tell me everything tomorrow. I want to hear all the details.”

“Promise.” I kissed her forehead. “Sleep well. I’ll see you in the morning.”

“If Ivy doesn’t murder me first.
